Save Now, Hike Later: Big Deals on Hiking Gear During the REI Labor Day Sale

May 27, 2023

It's still summer, but we're looking ahead to leaf-peeping fall hikes. Even more exciting are these big deals on hiking gear.

REI’s Labor Day Sale runs through Sept. 4 and includes savings of up to 40% on hiking gear from top-name brands. There’s plenty of hiking weather left but keep next season in mind while shopping too.

The inventories are limited and can run out fast so if you find a deal to your liking, add it to your cart. We’ve outlined some of our favorite deals on hiking apparel and gear below, and rundowns of deals on camping gear and bestsellers too.

To find even more deals, check out the entire REI Labor Day Sale.

This is a packable hardshell with a wide “angel wing” yoke for greater mobility on hikes or around town. The waterproof-breathable GORE-TEX PACLITE is a two-layer membrane to protect from the elements. It has a fully adjustable hood, zippered hand and chest pockets, and a drawcord hem.

A rain jacket will shed water … onto your pants. So it’s always a good idea to pack waterproof pants to stay dry. These XeroDry waterproof-breathable pants use GORE-TEX PACLITE protection, like the companion jacket listed above.

The pants have an elastic waistband with drawcord, zippered hand pockets, articulated knees, ankle zippers, and even a boot hook to keep them in place.

Nothing says hiking versatility like convertible pants. These are made with stretch recycled nylon to hold up through scratchy trails and bumpy logs. They use flat-seam stitching to prevent chafing and pack down more.

Vertical zippers run from the bottom to mid-thigh for ventilation or to convert into shorts without taking off your boots. The zippers are color-coded to make it easier to zip the right legs back into place. The fabric offers UPF 50-plus sun protection and has a DWR coating to shed light moisture.

Hiking shirts don’t need to be dripping with tech, but it’s best when they have some tech that won’t leave you dripping with sweat.

This short-sleeved T-shirt is made from a fast-drying polyester/spandex blend that includes a treatment to prohibit the growth of odor-causing bacteria. It has shoulder seams that sit forward to avoid chafing shoulders from a pack rubbing against them. It provides UPF 30 sun protection

The button-up long sleeve is made from (bluesign-approved) stretch nylon with roll-up sleeves and a back vent for getting more air. The long sleeve comes with chest pockets, a zipper pocket, and a sunglass-keeper loop. It provides UPF 50-plus sun protection.

These boots juggle comfort, support, and style using lots of eco-friendly materials. The nubuck leather uppers use an Oboz B-DRY waterproof-breathable membrane to keep feet dry from the elements and moisture buildup inside. A women’s-specific last in the women’s version helps shape the footbeds and overall fit.

To reduce the ecological footprint, Oboz made these boots with plant-based foam and recycled webbing, laces, and linings.

With more than 15 years on the trail, the KEEN Targhee III Waterproof Mid hiking boots have established a reputation for a casual ride and feel inside the rugged protection from scrapes and weather you’d expect from traditional boots.

Leather uppers, toe and mud guards, and 4mm multidirectional lugged soles round out the hiking features. The out-of-the-box comfort is while you’ll see them beyond the trail.

Look for sneaker comfort and weight in these trail-ready hiking shoes. They’re not boots but offer some of the same benefits.

Adidas put its formfitting PRIMEKNIT fabric in the uppers and Boost foam underfoot. Rounding out the performance chops are Continental rubber outsoles for traction on dry and wet conditions, and a GORE-TEX membrane for waterproofing.

Osprey’s AntiGravity suspension is at the heart of this Atmos AG pack. It’s made for longer trips or big weekends and so you’ll find nods to long-term comfort in the suspended mesh back panel as well as the adjustable shoulder harness, straps, and hip belt. There’s room inside for a hydration sleeve and a removable sleeping bag divider to help with organization.

The floating lid can be detached for its own solo adventures, there are stretch-mesh side pockets, and plenty of external pockets and loops for stashing poles, axes, or other gear. Osprey made these with 100% recycled materials and a PFC/PFAS-free durable water-repellent (DWR) finish.

Darn Tough Hiker Micro Crew Cushion socks have cushioning under the heel and forefoot with a bit on top where your laces tighten down. The midfoot is thinner to allow for greater airflow in your shoes or boots. The brand trail-tested these socks on the Vermont Long Trail, and they’re popular on a lot of other trails too.

Mountain Hardwear made this hiking-minded hoodie with a knit fabric to wick moisture and dry quickly while feeling soft against your skin. It has a full hood, dropped shoulders, and drawcord ties at the hem. It’s a simple design with an emphasis on being roomy and moving sweat.
